ɫ’s Alumni & Friends ‘All That Jazz’ concert is Nov. 20

ɫ’s Alumni & Friends Choir fall concert, “All That Jazz,” is Sunday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. in the Activities Building gymnasium on ɫ’s Sidney campus.Admission is free, but a suggested donationis a nonperishable item to benefit United Way Montcalm-Ionia Counties Holiday Hope Bags.

“We’re excited to sing jazz numbers from as early as 1911, and covering at least 75 years of music by Jazz greats such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington,” saidchoir director and ɫ part-time Instructor Valerie VanderMark.

Music selection include: “ɫ Alma Mater;” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” with solos by Pam and Randy Masterson; “You Made Me Love You,” with a trumpet solo by Benjamin Piela.

The men will sing: “Sweet Georgia Brown,” with solos by Errol Moerdyk and Larry Moss.

The women will sing: “Gershwin for Girls” a medley including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “The Man I Love,” and “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” with a solo by Karen Lincoln.

Other selections include: “I’ve Got You Under My Skin;” Irving Berlin: “A Century of Song” (“Heat Wave,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Steppin’ Out”); “It Don’t Mean a Thing: The Best of Duke Ellington,” including “Take the A Train,” “Mood Indigo,” “Satin Doll” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing)”with soloist Marian Flynn; “And All That Jazz.”

In addition, we’ve got an instrumental Jazz combo, directed by Keith Hudson, accompanying several of the songs, and a professional dance couple who will be performing at the concert,” Vander Mark said. “This concert will be fun for all ages, and the audience will go home tapping their toes and singing the familiar tunes for days afterwards!”
